Rules in accordance with Cemetery Law
The Verona Cemetery Association Board of Trustees shall have the final authority in ALL matters pertaining to cemetery lots, cemetery grounds, and cemetery structures. The final authority shall include, but not be exclusive to, any decisions regarding location, size, shape, color, and any other physical characteristics of any gravestones, crypts, mausoleums, markers, or any other objects placed above or below any cemetery property.
The Verona Cemetery Association Board of Trustees shall protect the rights of neighboring lot owners as deemed to be in the best interests of all lot owners.
Further, a special designated area shall be the exclusive location used only for the placement of any crypt, mausoleum, or similar structure. This specially designated section (area) includes the Samuel Dam Family mausoleum, and from the date of December 02, 2000, forward, shall include the parts of Section “I” designated as Lots #23–28, and Section “J” designated as lots #12–14, and only such additional lots as shall be designated by agreement of the Verona Cemetery Association Board of Trustees.
Lot Ownership
All lots in the Verona Cemetery are sold in accordance with the provisions of the law of the State of New York and shall not be used for any other purpose than as a burial place for deceased human beings. Ownership means the right of the owner or heirs to be buried in the designated lot or lots listed in the deed.
Lot owners are prohibited from allowing interments to be made on their lots for compensation.
Except as provided for in Section 1513 (c) of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, no lot owner may transfer their lot.
The full purchase price must be paid before a deed will be given or burial allowed on the lot.
The sale of any lot includes a fee of 10% that is placed in a special Permanent Maintenance Fund for the permanent maintenance of lot(s).
Burials
No interment shall be allowed without permission being first obtained from the Verona Cemetery Association. The Superintendent or Verona Cemetery Trustee must be present for all interments. At the time of applying for permission, the following information must be furnished:
- Name of deceased.
- Age of deceased – including date of birth, if known.
- Place of birth of deceased, if known.
- Date of death.
- Time and date of interment.
- If not an adult, the names of parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of deceased.
Interments in a lot are restricted to those entitled to burial therein according to the Terms of Section 1512 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law. Permission for burial for those not entitled to burial according to said Section must be filed with the Verona Cemetery Association by the lot owner(s).
Only one full body or three cremated remains will be permitted in each grave.
Pet burials are not permitted.
All funerals, processions, and vehicles will be under the control of the superintendent or a designated trustee while in the cemetery.
Disinterments will be allowed between April 1st and November 1st provided there is compliance with all the provisions of Section 1510 (e) of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law. Exceptions to these dates will be considered at the discretion of the Executive Committee.
Interments on Sundays and Holidays will be governed by Cemetery Board Directive 201.12 and Not-for-Profit Corporation Law 1510-b.
Concrete vaults or concrete grave liners will be required for interments in all graves purchased on or after June 1, 2025, unless previously approved, in accordance with the provisions of the Cemetery Board Directive 201.6.
The interment of cremated remains will be permitted only in appropriate rigid receptacles such as wood, metals, plastic, or concrete. Cremated remains will not be permitted to be scattered in any part of the cemetery.
Lot Rules
The planting of any tree, shrub, the setting of any hedge, the building of any stone or brick wall or fence around the perimeter of the lot, or the raising of the grade of any lot above adjoining lots without the consent of the Cemetery Association is prohibited. Planting and decorating are allowed within twelve (12) inches of the foundation. Glass containers, artificial flowers, shells, pinwheels and stuffed animals are not allowed. Solar lighting is allowed within the planting area. The Verona Cemetery Association reserves the right to restrict the planting of shrubs and trees and to remove any shrub or tree deemed dangerous to the public, upon due notice to the lot owner.
The Verona Cemetery Association reserves the right to remove, after an attempt to contact the lot owner, any embellishment on the lot, effigy, or inscription which, in the opinion of the majority of the trustees, is unsightly or dangerous.
Please remember that it is the plot owner’s responsibility to maintain all decorations. All objects considered to be a hindrance to the maintenance or respectful appearance of the cemetery grounds may be removed. The Cemetery Association will attempt to contact the plot owner(s) prior to removing any such objects.
No monuments or markers shall be permitted which utilize colors other than those of natural stone or bronze.
All foundations will be constructed by or under the direction of the Verona Cemetery Association.
All work done in the cemetery shall be done by cemetery employees or under the control or with the permission of the superintendent or trustees.
Only one monument shall be allowed on a lot, and it shall be set in accordance with the general plan of the cemetery and shall conform with said plan in size and material.
Monuments are restricted in size to dimensions which will not cover more than 80% of the surface area of the lot. Every monument shall be at least six (6) inches in thickness.
The bases of all monuments shall be finished true and level to fit on foundations without wedging.
No monument will be allowed to be delivered to the cemetery until the foundation is installed and ready to receive the monument.
All monuments or markers must be constructed of granite or bronze.
Miscellaneous
Heavy trucking or other vehicular traffic shall be refused entrance to the cemetery when, in the opinion of the superintendent, damage to roads and driveways might result.
All people shall be allowed access to the cemetery during daylight hours, observing the rules which are in effect and the respect due the Cemetery. The cemetery may not be accessible due to inclement weather conditions.
